Tutorials | Colorizations | Jessica
Since I absolutely love the colorization of Jessica Biel I made, I decided to make a tutorial of it to help some people.

This is what we're going to make: user posted image from

Ghada's 'Wild Child' colorization challenge.

This tutorial is going to have selective coloring however, I've also included another option you can apply and skip the selective coloring if you don't have Photoshop. I know PSP doesn't have selective coloring so you guys are safe from that you can still try the tutorial.

Let's start with the beginning: Choosing the right image. I don't like to work with hair; in fact, I hate hair. I love working with full faces. So I've picked a few images for you to choose from if you want to use something that's different from my image (which I highly recommend). Any of the following albums are great: 1 | 2| there are more pictures here which you are more than welcome to take a look at and grab anything you want. All the images are black and white so you don't have to do desaturate it yourself.

1. Right click the image that you want, click on copy and open a new photoshop canvas and paste it. Make sure that you go to Image > Mode and click on RGB Color. Because the image that you just copied and pasted is black and white, any colors that you add on that canvas will turn out a shade of gray because Photoshop selects the color palette of the image by default.

2. Make a new layer; Layer > New > New Layer. Fill the layer with #fdc087, set it on Soft Light and set the opacity on 68%. Go to filter > Blur > Guassian Blur (value of 5 to 7). Apply the Gaussian blur once or twice. This is what you'll get.

3. Take a drop shadow circle brush and erase some of the eyes and lips so that they remain gray. If you don't have a drop shadow brush (which you should have if you have Adobe Photoshop as it's part of the preset brushes), read the below paragraph.

If you don't have the drop shadow brush you might as well get it because if you read all my tutorials or any of them for that matter, there's a high chance that you'll have to use it anyways. Here is the image in black and white. Save the image on your computer (or you can copy and paste it into a new canvas. Go to Edit > Define Brush and there you go! You can also increase the diameter and hardness/softness of the edges by click on the black arrow that inside the box.

4. Making another new layer and fill it with #ff8769. I would just duplicate the above orange layer and go to Layer > Layer Style > Color Overlay. Then add the #ff8769. If you do it this way, you don't have to do the whole Gaussian blur thing. Make sure you set this new layer on Soft Light 100%.

5. Now to the teeth. Make a new layer. Using the drop shadow brush make a little dot (or two) on top of Jessica's teeth with color #e2ac78. Mine. Make sure you apply some gaussian blur a few times so that the outer edges are soft like mine.

6. Make a new layer. Using the drop shadow brush, once again, go over her lips. Use color #fc0f2c. Apply the Gaussian Blur 2-4 times until you get it to be very soft on all edges. Set that layer on overlay. Mine.

7. Now we're going to work on the eyes. Using the drop shadow brush (or you can use the Elliptical marquee tool and make a circle on top of each pupil). If the drop shadow brush is too big, just resize it to a smaller size. If the outer edges of your two circles aren't blended enough with the rest of the eye and are too densely colored on the outside, just apply a few gaussian blur affects and it should look fine. The color you should use is #7e975e or any other color that you think is reasonable. Set it on Overlay 100%. Mine.

8. Make a new layer. Using the drop shadow circle brush go over the outside the lashes and around, just like you would apply make up. Color #5697d0. Apply a lot of gaussian blur. It's okay if yours looks like this. Set that blue layer on Soft Light 100% or Overlay, however I prefer Soft light as we are going to be using selective layering later. Mine.

If you don't have Adobe Photoshop and have some other program please skip to section a (after #13).

9. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation. Without checking the colorize box, insert the following values. Hue: 0, Saturation: +50, Lightness:0. Click okay. This layer should be set on Normal 100%.

10. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color. Insert the following values:

*Method is relative at all times.

I also uploaded the PSD if you're feeling too lazy. It's also grouped.

Black: 11

11. It's really important that you do this step. All the three layers that you have made so far (9-11), select them all by clicking on the first layer (Hue/Saturation) with your mouse, hit SHIFT, and click on the third selective layer. This is how the 3 will look like when all are selected at the same time. After you click shift and select all three, hit CTRL + G. What that will do is put the 3 selective coloring layers in one group. If you look at the picture that I just provided you with, you'll see that there is a folder with 'Group' right next to it and an arrow pointing down. If I click on the arrow it will face towards the Group like this >. Image.

12. Make sure you click on that arrow and get the 3 layers to be under the group (this way they're all into one layer). Click on that layer (that says Group) and set it on Pass Through 36%. Mine.

13. Click on the Jessica or your black and white image. Using the burn tool. This is the values that your burn brush should be set on. Go over the lashes, lids and maybe the lips too if you want. I think I did the lips in mine.

Section A: This is only for the people who don't have adobe photoshop. If you can do selective coloring, stop reading this and go to the next step.

Now, flatten your image. Duplicate it. Set the 2nd layer on Color Burn 28%. Do the next step below and you're good. This is what mine looks like without adding selective coloring.

14. Flatten your image. Go to Effects > Sharpen > Sharpen. If you're image isn't very high quality like mine is or doesn't look like it can handle a sharpen, don't sharpen it. Just go with whatever looks good. I added a sharpen because my image can handle it and it'll give it a little shine and sparkle.

HOWEVER, because my image is a little too big I don't sharpen it just yet. I like to color big images and then resize them to smaller ones just for ease. So I resize mine to 443x560 pixels. Then I open a new canvas that is 453x570 pixels, paste my colorization in it and add a 10 pixel black border. I flatten my image. And now, I got to Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen and I get the final result ^.

15. Font isn't necessary but you can put it on if you want. Just put a little text on the side. I wrote 'Wild Child' since that was the name of the challenge. I also used the font Vladimir Script (Dafont.com) to type 'Wild Child.'
