Icon Tutorials | Natalie Portman
For Adobe Photoshop (Any Version). Very Detailed. Beginner to Advanced

We’re going to go from this to

I don’t mind you duplicating this image, however, please do try to use another base/celebrity for your icon. Replicating my icon image by image isn’t going to help you.

Now, I’m going to use the below base. I didn’t make this base, it was taken from BasicBases. You can grab one from my list of bases.

  1. Duplicate the above base. Set the 2nd copy on Soft Light 100%. Image.
  2. Make a new layer (Layer--> Layer --> New or Shift + CTRL + N). Fill it with color #ffd675. Set this layer on Soft Light 100%.
  3. Now we’ll make a Hue/Saturation layer. Image on how to find Hue/Saturation Option. Set the Hue/Sat to the following: Hue: 0 Saturation: +13 Brightness: 0
  4. Now we’ll make a selective coloring layer. The Selective Coloring option is right under the Hue/Saturation option (which I had shown you in the last step). Set this on the following: Make sure the method is set on “Relative."
    Reds: Cyan= -100, Magenta= 0, Yellow= +100, Black=0
    Yellows: Cyan= -100, Magenta= 0, Yellow= +100, Black=0
    Neutrals: Cyan= +87, Magenta= +21, Yellow= -36, Black=-28
  5. Another layer of Selective coloring:
    Reds: Cyan= -100, Magenta= 0, Yellow= +100, Black=0
    Yellows: Cyan= +75, Magenta= 0, Yellow= -100, Black=0
    Magentas: Cyan= -100, Magenta= -100, Yellow= -100, Black=0
    Neutrals: Cyan= +82, Magenta= +6, Yellow= -51, Black=+15
    Blacks: Cyan= 0, Magenta= 0, Yellow= 0, Black=+100
  6. New Color Fill Layer. The Color Fill option is in the same menu as the Selective coloring and Hue/Saturation options. It's the 1st one at the top of the menu. Put #a6a5a5 in the color palette. Set this on Overlay 100%.
  7. Make a new layer, fill it with #000000 which is black. Set this layer on Overlay 37%. This is the result.
  8. Go to Layer-->Flatten Image. Then Hit CTRL + A (Select All), CTRL + C (Copy), Open a New Photoshop Document, hit CTRL + V (Paste). Pasting the affected base in a new document allows us to work on a much more space and it will also conserve space. By flattening the image, you are compressing the color resolution, thus reducing the size of the image.
  9. Go to Layer-->Layer Style-->Stroke OR You can click on the swiggly f next to the square with a white circle inside it. Click here to see a screen shot. Stroke Color: # efeae6, Size: 3px, INSIDE (not outside).
  10. Take this brush set (I don’t know from where as there are so many types of text brushes). To turn it into a brush, please follow the following steps.
    a. Open a new document and copy and paste the image I gave you into that document.
    b. Go to Edit-->Define Brush Preset. Click Here to see an Image.
    c. Go to Your Brush Palette. If you can’t see your brush palette go to Windows (it’s in the top where “File” and “Edit” are, and make sure that “Brushes” is selected. If it’s not, hit F5). It should be in there. To make the color of the brush the same as mine, in your color palette change the color to #e9474c. It’s basically the same color as Natalie’s lips. Apply it as many times as need or until it gets dark enough. Set this brush on the right side of the icon.
  11. Copy and paste the Natalie Portman base. Put it on top of the text brush.
  12. Using the Marquee cropping tool make a triangle of her face. Make sure you don’t get any of the white stuff that is on the side. Your Marquee tool is located in your toolbar, which is on the left side. Click here to see what it looks like and also look at how much of Natalie’s face I’m cropping.
  13. After cropping and getting the little dotted frame around your selection, hit CTRL + C and CTRL + P. This is approximately what you’ll get. Please don’t copy that image and put it on your file. Try to make your own so that you learn.
  14. Now make sure that when that layer (Nat’s face, the part that we just cropped) is selected, you can see a dotted border around it and squares on each corner. Also, make sure that the Show Transform Controls is selected, if it is not you will not see that border. So select it. Here is an image that shows you were it is located and what it looks like.
  15. Put your mouse on top of the dotted border and click on it. You will see that dotted border turn into a solid one. You will also see that the top toolbar (where the Show Transform Controls used to be located it) is turned into this. Change the W to 60% and the H to 60%. This will decrease the size of the image with the right proportions. If you don’t like how your image turned out and you want it to be more rectangle-ish than square-ish, use the marquee tool and cut some of the right side off. If your image looks a little blurred go to Filter-->Sharpen-->Sharpen. Don’t oversharpen.
  16. So far this is what I have.
  17. Duplicate that small, cropped portion. You can either hit Hit CTRL + A (Select All), CTRL + C (Copy), CTRL + P or you can right click your mouse and hit the “Duplicate Layer” option.
  18. Put the 1st small image in the middle, ½ on Natalie’s face and the other half on the text brush.
  19. Take the 2nd small image, move it down a little and a little to the right. By doing that we can see a little of the 1st small image.(You can use the arrow down and left on your keyboard, but make sure that you have that layer selected when doing so).
  20. Take this brush and repeat the steps in #10 a-c. Change the color of the brush to white, #ffffff.
  21. Make a new layer.
  22. Apply the brush about 3-5 time or until you get a little white on the bottom. This is what mine looks like right now.
  23. Take this brush and put it on top of the 2 small images. (Turn it into a brush first, steps in #10, a-c) Color # c94d66.
  24. Go to Layer-->Layer Style-->Outer Glow. Color: White, Opacity: Normal, 100%, Technique: Precise, Size: 4, Range: 50.
  25. Take this image and put on the top, right side. It’s actually a brush that has the letter “N” written in cursive with a little pixel text on the right side of it. I made the text portion dark pink and the put a white, solid box behind it. I just gave you the image though. If you want to turn that image into a brush, hit CTRL + Shift + U to make it black and white, then do step #10, a-c.
  26. Take this diagonal image, turn it into a brush, make the color # c94d66. Set the Opacity 100% and put it on “Color Burn.”
And you’re done!
